Doughnuts; I can't get enough of them. So it’s great news for me that these sweet pockets of sugary goodness are gaining in popularity. Recently opening at a space in Shoreditch’s Boxpark is Dum Dum Doughnuts. The enterprise was started by Paul Hurley to create ‘The Best Doughnut in the World’ and, though this statement is rather bold, the results are pretty darn delicious.

The doughnuts are freshly baked every day, rather than deep fat fried in the traditional style. The doughnuts are sprayed with vegetable oil and put in the oven – which reduces fat over all by about 12 grams (although these are hardly a diet-friendly snack).

On arrival my eyes were immediately drawn to the pretty majestic strawberries and cream cronut, with its many thin layers of pastry, jam and whole strawberry. Having never tried a cronut (a mix between doughnut and croissant originating from New York) before I was eager to get my hands on it. It was a mouth-watering, melting mountain of tangy jam and sweet cream. Half would have been enough to fill me up, but I had to finish it – it was just so nice. I also bought a simple raspberry jam doughnut which was fluffy and light.

The wide variety of doughnuts on offer includes a Zebra cronut with chocolate buttercream and chocolate ganache, almond cream and pistachio, a crème brulee and a banoffee doughnut. Dum Dum Doughnuts are available at Boxpark in Shoreditch and Harrod’s food hall.
