On a sunny afternoon stroll through Brick Lane I happened to stumble across Suzzle, a tiny little eatery on the iconic London street, which specialises in homemade, gluten-free fare and an intimate and homely-vibe. The place is so homely, in fact, that it's in someone's converted living room.
Melanie Denyer, the owner and very friendly face at the front of house, created the cafe, which also doubles as an art gallery, because she was sick and tired of having to eat sub-standard food to avoid gluten, lactose and soya. She makes a variety of delicious foods, from cakes and pastries to savory lunches such as soups and courgette and onion bread.
I ordered a slice of the tomato and cheddar quiche and a mix of salad including an absolutely divine puy lentil variety (I currently have a bit of a puy addiction), and a chai latte. The meal didn't disappoint in the slightest, especially the quiche which was really cheesy and velvety with a firm crust. All this came to only £5.40 which I found high reasonable in a city where it's difficult to get something more exciting than a sandwich a packet of crisps for less than £7.00.
Suzzle has a very laid back and friendly atmosphere. During my meal many regulars came in and chatted away, Melanie's son came home from school, and her cat came over to say hello. Although I appreciate this homely and kitsch space wouldn't be to everyone's taste (not all people enjoy purring cats interrupting their meal times although I do and encourage more cafes to take it up), I heartily recommend it to those who love homemade food, art, and cats at a very reasonable rate.
