BRUNCH AT BLIGHTY COFFEE, FINSBURY PARK

Finsbury Park is changing, and Blighty Coffee, on Blackstock Road, is a part of that change. The area, which is becoming increasingly popular amongst creative types, is seeing an influx of cafes and creative spaces.

Blighty Coffee, half café half workshop, lends itself perfectly to a languorous kind of morning, which could easily become an afternoon.

The bright and sunny downstairs space is perfect for a quick drop in, while the upstairs fitted with comfy sofas could be called home for a couple of hours as you rest with a book. The garden has ping pong tables.

The breakfast menu, like the rest of the place, is inspired by 1940s Britain. I had the eggs Shropshire, which came with asparagus and blue cheese. It was delicious. The eggs where cooked perfectly runny, and the hollandaise sauce was thick and tangy. The crunch of the asparagus and the strong blue cheese was a wonderful combination.

I also ordered the Orancino - a cappuccino poured over fresh orange rind, which is an exclusive to Blighty Coffee.

It was one of those breakfasts I often revisit in my mind. As soon as I have a Sunday morning spare I’ll be heading back for round two.

The venue is still waiting for the rest of its renovation. The owner hopes, in time to spread the WWII theme from the menu to the rest of the building, and even to the staff who he hopes in time will dress in 1940’s regalia.

I could have stayed all morning and read my book. Blighty Coffee is a gem in Finsbury Park, somewhere I would happily take a friend for brunch.
