I’m
not going to harp on at you about the benefits of juicing. That’s for Gwyneth
Paltrow and other raw food coverts and yoga addicts to do. All I know is after
succumbing to the hype and trying juicing out for myself I have discovered
numerous benefits which have made it a part of my routine, whether as an accompaniment
to a long brunch or an on-the-go liquid health fix.
This
basic recipe I started out with, due mainly to its few ingredients (if I didn’t
like it wasn’t such a financial loss) is refreshing and easy to make. It’s
packed full of fibre, antioxidants, flavonoids and vitamins C and A as well as
lots of potassium. I’m
not going to lie, it tastes of veg but the apple adds some necessary sweetness
and just think of the good you are doing to your skin, hair and general wellbeing.
Ingredients:
Two
handfuls of kale
One
large stick of celery
Two
medium sized carrots
One
apple
750 ml of water
750 ml of water
You
will also need a blender and a sieve with fine holes.
It is important to remember that vegetables should be the basis of your drink. Fruit-based versions, although delicious, are packed full of sugar making them absolutely terrible for your teeth and can cause nasty ulcers in your mouth or even your stomach if consumed every day.
Method:
1)
Chop your carrots, celery and apple into small pieces
(especially the carrots, as these particularly hard veggies can play havoc with
your blender if not chopped small enough).
2)
Take about half your water and the kale and blitz together in
your blender for about two minutes.
3)
Add the carrots and celery and water incrementally. It doesn’t
matter what order your do this in but make sure to do it in small handfuls, fully
liquidising each time, for the sake of your blender.
4)
Now drain the stick, mulchy, dark green concoction through
the sieve.
There
you have it! Enjoy your incredibly healthy breakfast with superiority, relishing in its deliciously deep,
grassy green colouring. As my housemate said, “If something is that colour, you know it’s
good for you."
